Exhibition at the Military History Museum from May 10 to December 31, 2025!
Of the many attacks the city of Tournai has suffered throughout its long history, the 1745 attack is undoubtedly the most memorable.
Seeing a stronghold and citadel built by Louis XIV and captured by his enemies in 1709, reconquered 36 years later by his successor to the throne of France, was in itself a feat of arms that could have changed our destiny. But this assault is remarkable because it gave rise to a battle whose name remains fresh in everyone's memory: Fontenoy.
This battle, pitting English, Dutch, and Austrian forces against the army of King Louis XV, led by Marshal Maurice de Saxe, ended in an exceptional victory that has gone down in French history.
