Tournai has celebrated a strange event earlier this year: the 12th anniversary of the disappearance of the Byzantine cross.
For the record, this unique piece arrives in Tournai in 1225. It is offered by a knight of the chapter. This precious object is gold plated, set with precious stones and glass paste. A real treasure that the Cathedral proudly exhibited until 2008.
On February 18 of that year, two thieves threatened the guards of the Cathedral with their weapons and stole the cross, also taking other exhibited objects.
This theft is an invaluable loss for the Cathedral and all Tournaisians attached to the historical heritage of their city!
At the moment, we still don't know where this gem is.
