The Tournai Belfry is reopening!
After several months of closure, the Tournai Belfry is once again open to visitors. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it invites you to climb its steps to discover one of the city’s most iconic monuments and enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of Tournai and its surroundings.
Belgium’s oldest belfry
Standing 72 metres tall, the belfry proudly overlooks Tournai’s Grand-Place. Built in the 12th century, it is Belgium’s oldest belfry and has embodied municipal freedoms for centuries.
Throughout its history, it has served many purposes: as a watchtower, a defensive structure, a prison, a bell tower and even an observation post. Thanks to its bells, it set the rhythm of city life by announcing trials, executions, fires and invasions.
Today, it remains a true symbol of Tournai and a must-see for all visitors.
A journey into the heart of history
The tour begins with a climb up its impressive spiral staircase, which immediately immerses you in the atmosphere of medieval architecture.
Along the way, discover an educational room tracing the history of the Belfry, its architecture and the various roles it has played over the centuries. A few steps further up, the ancient dungeons offer a striking glimpse into prison life in medieval times.
Two terraces, two exceptional panoramic views
After 142 steps, the first terrace offers a spectacular 360° view of Tournai and the surrounding area.
Continue your climb to the Bancloque, the oldest and most imposing bell in the Belfry. Just a few more steps… and, after a total of 257 steps, the second terrace rewards you with an exceptional panorama stretching for kilometres in every direction.
The Sunday carillon, an unmissable event
Every Sunday at 3.30 pm, the carillon bells ring out over the city. The carillonneur plays traditional or contemporary melodies that provide a delightful backdrop to the hustle and bustle of the Grand-Place. For an even more immersive experience, climb up to the carillonneur’s chamber and witness this unique musical spectacle live!

The Belfry is open to the public:
- Individual visitors: 1.00 pm to 5.00 pm (except Mondays and public holidays)
>> Please note that the last tickets are issued 30 minutes before the Belfry closes! Approximate duration of a self-guided tour: 40 mins.
Admission prices for individual visitors (1 January 2026):
- €5 for adults
- €3 for young people aged 6 to 18, students, Handypass holders and senior citizens (aged 60 and over)
- Free for children under 6 (when accompanied)
Accessibility:
- The Belfry is not accessible to people with reduced mobility.
- Pets are not permitted.
